Yeşilova Höyük changes the usual starting point for İzmir’s history. Long before Smyrna’s harbours, Roman streets or Ottoman bazaars, communities were building houses and organising daily life on the Bornova Plain. Excavations place the earliest settlement here roughly 8,500 years ago.
The mound was identified in 2003 and systematic work followed. Archaeologists documented Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age evidence, along with later remains. Because the layers lie within the modern city, Yeşilova makes deep prehistory feel unexpectedly close.
What archaeology reveals
Late Neolithic buildings were constructed with stone foundations and arranged around shared courtyards. Hearths, tools, pottery and food remains help reconstruct how households worked, while repeated flood deposits show that settlement was shaped by streams and alluvium.
Later communities did not simply continue the same way of life. Changes in building form and pottery suggest breaks, movement and new populations. Yeşilova is valuable precisely because it records adaptation rather than a smooth story of progress.

Low walls and soil layers require explanation. Look for the relationship between rooms and common outdoor space rather than expecting monumental structures.
Visitor centre and educational work
The centre interprets the “first İzmir residents” and supports experimental activities that demonstrate tool making, clay work and other prehistoric techniques. Availability of programmes varies, especially for individual visitors and school groups.
Connection with Yassıtepe
Nearby Yassıtepe adds another sequence of prehistoric occupation. The two mounds belong to the same Bornova Plain research landscape but should not be treated as identical sites.

Contact the visitor centre or check official information in advance. Access may depend on working hours, excavation activity or organised programmes. Allow about an hour for interpretation; without context, the physical remains can be difficult to read.
